Things to do in Cairo
Pyramids of giza
The Pyramids, which are located on the Giza plateau, 18 kilometers from Cairo, are not only Egypt’s most significant landmarks, but also the world’s oldest. These are funerary structures that were built on the orders of different dynasties of pharaohs.
The pharaohs were mummified and placed in pyramids with some food and their most valuable possessions to accompany them on their final journey. Although the exact date of the Great Pyramids’ creation is unknown, it is thought that it started around 2500 BC.
Great Sphinx of Giza
The Great Sphinx of Giza is a massive sculpture with a human head and a lion’s body that stands alongside the Giza Pyramids. It is one of the most extraordinary and famous monuments in the world, not just in Egypt.
The mysterious Sphinx stands about 20 meters tall and is about 70 meters long, with a human head and a lion’s body, combining wisdom and power in one figure for the ancient Egyptians. It is thought to have been built about 2,500 BC as part of Khafrén’s funerary complex in order to serve as the guardian of his tomb.
Egyptian Museum in Cairo
The Egyptian Museum in Cairo, housed in an elegant neoclassical building custom-built to house its exquisite collections, opened in 1902 and has not stopped growing since then, becoming the world’s most important museum of its kind.
Among the museum’s valuable artifacts are sculptures, drawings, reliefs, and funerary items. However, two areas stand out from the rest of the exhibitions: the Tutankhamun quarters, which house the treasures discovered in his tomb, and the room of the mummies, which houses the mummified remains of important pharaohs.
Khan El Khalili
The most popular market in Egypt and the Middle East is Khan El Khalili. It was established in 1382 by Mamluk Sultan Djaharks el-Khalili, who wanted to establish a resting place for merchants. The ruins of an ancient Fatimid cemetery were chosen as the location.
Lamps in different colours, fabrics, handicrafts, jewels, spices, perfumes, musical instruments, Egyptian souvenirs and gifts… There are literally hundreds of shops in the small streets that make up the Khan El Khalili area.
Alabaster Mosque
The Muhammad Ali Mosque, also known as the Alabaster Mosque because of the material that coats it both inside and out, is situated on top of Mount Muqatam, inside the Saladin Citadel..
Muhammad Ali ordered the mosque to be constructed between 1830 and 1857 in memory of his eldest son, who died in 1816. They were influenced by the New Mosque in Istanbul for its architecture. With a rectangular plan protected by a wide central dome and many semi-domes framed by two delicate minarets, the mosque was designed on the style of Ottoman mosques.
