Things to do in Reykjavik
Blue Lagoon
The Blue Lagoon in Iceland is one of the most popular tourist attractions in the world, not just in Reykjavik. Its bluish hot springs, as well as the volcanic environment in which they are located, have made it a popular tourist destination.
The Icelandic Blue Lagoon is a large thermal pool with a striking azure blue color due to the high amounts of silica particles in its composition, which are also beneficial to the skin. This silica is used in one of the face exfoliating treatments available at the hot springs, along with other masks made from algae and even lava.
Laugavegur
Laugavegur passes through the historic center of Reykjavik and is one of the city’s oldest and longest streets. It all began in 1885, when a path was constructed to allow women to wash their clothes at the Laugardalur hot springs.
Laugavegur Street, which is crowded with stores, traditional Icelandic restaurants, and pubs, is the most well-known street in the city. Its colorful buildings make it Reykjavik’s most beautiful street. Laugavegur is one of the best places to stay in Reykjavik, but it’s also one of the priciest, particularly during peak season.
Hallgrímskirkja
The Hallgrmskirkja church is Reykjavik’s most iconic landmark, with its distinct style. It is possible to see the bell tower from many kilometers away if the weather is clear.
The Hallgrmskirkja is a Lutheran church that has become the icon of Reykjavik due to its size, location, and design. The monolithic facade of the Hallgrmskirkja church is also very Icelandic, as the architect was influenced by the abundance of basalt columns in the region, such as those of Skaftafell’s Svartifoss waterfall.
Perlan Museum
Although its glass dome is the first thing that catches your eye, the Perlan Museum’s most fascinating features are its display on Iceland’s Wonders, its Planetarium, and its panoramic viewpoint.
Perlan, with its huge glass dome and geothermal heating system, became one of Reykjavik’s great architectural landmarks when it opened in the summer of 1991. Since then, it has been resource for those interested in learning about the origins and evolution of Iceland’s most popular natural tourist attractions, such as Geysir and Leirhnjkur.
Sun Traveler
Reykjavik’s mysterious Sun Traveler sculpture is one of the city’s most famous attractions.
The Sun Traveler, Reykjavik’s most iconic sculpture, was created in the mid-1980s to celebrate the city’s bicentennial constitution. Jón Gunnar Arnason created an elegant steel sculpture reminiscent of a Viking ship, honoring Iceland’s past and seafaring tradition. The Sun Traveler is currently situated north of Reykjavik, on the Atlantic Ocean’s shores. The original site was to the west of the city, on a hill near Lake Tjörnin, to reflect the regular journey that the star king makes from east to west.
