Facilities at Madrid Barajas Airport

There are many facilities at Madrid-Barajas airport, such as restaurants, fast food, breweries, VIP lounges, pharmacy, duty-free shops and gift shops.

The airport information points are located in strategic areas. You will find a team of green jackets that offer help and attention to the traveler.

Can you spend the night at the airport?

It is not so traumatic to spend the night at Madrid airport, as it has many facilities available 24 hours a day. Not all travelers are able to pay for a night when their flight leaves at dawn or early in the morning, although there are hotels nearby. Although inside the airport there are Air Rooms, rooms with a common living room for a few hours of sleep, these are payable. You have to find another solution if your pockets are skinny.

There are places to drink and eat 24 hours

In terminals 1, 2 and 4, options are available 24 hours a day. Both terminals have vending machines for beverages, sandwiches and snacks.

Where to rest?

With the exception of some cafeterias, Terminal 1 is not very spacious, nor does it have many seats available, while terminals 2, 3 and 4 have more space and benches. Some of them may not have armrests (mainly in the departure areas). When you see two or three together and unoccupied, do not hesitate and take them. Next to gate 17 of Terminal 4S, reclining chairs can be found. Note that in any of the terminals there are no areas with too much privacy and the lights typically stay on, so you better have a mask. If you have to sleep on the floor, get a blanket, as the place is typically cold at night. One of the VIP lounges is another choice (paying around € 30.00 or with a membership) to use. Some can be found 24 hours a day: Iberia Velázquez, Neptuno, Cibeles.

Air Rooms

The Air Rooms accommodation facility on Floor -1 Terminal 4 consists of 21 rooms (with private bathroom and shower) in various modalities: overnight stay, day use (from 10 am to 6 pm, 6 hours maximum) or shower upon arrival (maximum 1 time).

Complimentary minibar and coffee drinks, hairdryer, bathroom facilities, towels, air conditioning, international flat-screen TV, internet, wake-up service, secure and desk, WIFI, breakfast, national and national newspapers and magazines.

Meet & Assist and Fast Track Facilities, luggage carriage, ESTA visa (USA travel), concierge, tax-free, business corner (telephone, fax, photocopies, etc.), switch, dry cleaning, personal shopper are also available.

Showers are available at Madrid airport

Showers are only accessible inside VIP areas and air rooms.

Passengers with disabilities

All airport areas are wheelchair accessible; all airlines operating at the airport have wheelchairs at their passengers’ disposal. Telephone booths and toilets prepared for the disabled are also available. All car  parks have spaces reserved for passenger vehicles with disabilities.

Meeting room

There are numerous VIP lounges at the airport and several venues that host conference rooms and meeting rooms. You can have lounges set at your fingertips in each terminal to relax or as a workspace, too.

Is there a luggage storage service?

In terminals 1 and 4, luggage storage facilities are available 24 hours a day, so you can leave your luggage and sleep if your flight leaves early in the morning without having to look at your belongings, and then retrieve them at the time of check-in. The counter at Terminal 4 is in the arrivals hall and it is opposite Baggage Hall 2 in Terminal 1.

Does Madrid airport have free Wi-Fi?

There is a free and unlimited wifi service at the airport and multiple connection points in the various terminal areas. Free wifi is called AIRPORT FREE WIFI AENA. There are also sockets for electrical devices and spaces with desks to work. Some terminals have print service.

Other services

You can use a large variety of ATMs, currency exchange offices, a post office and 2 banks, cafes, restaurants and more than 30 bars spread around the various terminals within the airport. It also has newsagents, a nursery, two pharmacies, a health care center and even a small Spa in T2.

Location and communications

The airport is located northeast of Madrid, in the Barajas district, although the airport system also extends through the municipalities of Alcobendas, San Sebastián de los Reyes and Paracuellos de Jarama.

T4, the most recent terminal, is separated by more than 2 kilometers from terminals T1, T2 and T3. For communication between all terminals, Aena has arranged a free bus service (Airport Shuttle).

In turn, the two buildings that make up Terminal 4: the main one and its satellite, being separated by more than a kilometer and having one of the tracks between them, are connected by a driverless electric pneumatic train that take the tour through an underground gallery.

Access by taxi

All terminals have taxi ranks, appropriately numbered, outside the arrivals areas. All journeys between the airport and the city of Madrid, irrespective of the number of passengers and the distance traveled, are subject to fixed rates. The trip to the city center has a flat rate of € 30.00 and takes 20-30 minutes.

Official taxis are white with red stripes and Madrid City Council logos on the doors. More information: Tel +34 914 804 613/619/623.

Access by bus

Upper Floor Entrance. Lower Floor Exit.
The cheapest and most convenient way from the city to get to the airport is by bus. Line 200 of the EMT connects the Avenida de América with Canillejas and terminals T1-T2-T3 and T4, respectively. The buses that operate line 200 are specifically designed for this route, have luggage racks and operate between 05:00 and 24:00, a much longer schedule than the rest of the EMT lines. Line 101 connects terminals 1, 2 and 3 of the Airport with the Historic Center of Barajas on one end and with the Canillejas on the other. The fares for lines 200 and 101 are the same as for the rest of the EMT network (€1.5 for a single ticket that goes down to €1.20 with metrobús).

Since November 2010, there is a new EMT line, the Airport Express Line, which leaves from the Atocha station, with stops at: Plaza de Cibeles and O’Donnell. From there it goes directly to Barajas airport, stopping at terminals 1, 2 and 4. The line runs 24 hours a day, 365 days a year with a rate of 5 euros per person (neither the metrobus nor the buses are valid on this line transport or tourist passes). At night, the head is in the Plaza de Cibeles, connecting with all the night bus lines in Madrid.

Other lines that connect the different terminals with nearby municipalities:

822: T1 – Coslada – San Fernando de Henares
824: T2 – Torrejón de Ardoz – Alcalá de Henares
827: Canillejas – T4 – Alcobendas – Autonomous University of Madrid – Tres Cantos
828: Canillejas – T4 – Alcobendas – Autonomous University of Madrid

Access by metro

The line 8 of the Metro de Madrid (New Ministerios-Airport T4) connects station New Ministries with airport terminals in 20 min.

There are 2 stations at the airport, the one serving the terminals T1-T2-T3 (located in Terminal T3) and the one in the new terminal area (Airport T4).

Barajas, the same as Barcelona Airport and Heathrow Airport (London), is one of only three European airports with several metro stations, where Barajas and Barcelona, with two each, at Heathrow, three.

Access by train

Since September 23, 2011, Terminal 4 has a Renfe commuter station.

In the future, it is planned to take the AVE to the airport. Thus, the Barajas Airport will be integrated not only in the network of Cercanías Madrid, but also in networks AVE and Long Distance of RENFE.
